I have recently read a book in which the origins of gay as queer. This word used to be originally used to refer the world of the demi - monde, that's to say, the 19th century French courtesans lifestyle. History says we all owe them the origins of the Haute Couture world and all sort of stuff. Several of them were or became lesbians. Queers used to visit them or belonged to their social environment. The courtesans' world vanished when World War First broke out and the lights of Europe turned off forever. However the word was meant to stay and the first usage of gay in its modern sense traces back to the late 1950s.

Now, that we're talking about the word GAY. Next, an appreciation on its origin:

The Anglo-Saxon term gay, nowadays, is synonymous of homosexual. That word was popularized in 1939 by the actor Gary Grant in the film “Bringing up Baby”.

The gay word in Spanish is by origin occitano, no English, (as many people think). English, the modern meaning belongs to assumed homosexual. The term proceeds of Latin "gaudium",= " gozo " . The word gaudium formed the term occitano "gai", that it meant " gozo ", " alegría " in principle. Next it proceeded to be in use as adjective and it signifies "alegre", "gozoso"="GAY".

Interestingly the occitan word gai was incorporated by the French and keeps its meaning. It's an prestigious word as it is related to the golden days of the Provencal poetry in the high Middle Age.

So, dear friends, let's make place for the specialists in medieval sing-sang ( and BTW occitan language... LOL ) and they would say “gâi(en)” means more or less something like “blossom”… And this word has made way trough history and we’re arrived to “ambiente”…
