El Kapallaq
Av Petit Thouars 4844, Miraflores
444-4149
Monday-Saturday from noon to 5:00 pm
This is definitely an expense account kind of place. I was the only guy in there not wearing a suit or sports jacket. The waiters are all in tuxedos (at lunch!). This restaurant is in a small former house in Miraflores. When I say small, I’m talking 11 tables small. When I got there, six of the tables were marked for reservations. When I left, every table was full.
El Kapallaq (don’t ask me how to pronounce it) has a seafood only menu. According to their business card, they’ve won a bunch of awards – I can believe it.
I started off with a ceviche of scallops (conchas) and conchas negras, mixed. The conchas negras seem more like clams to me, but whatever they are, they’re delicious. My second course was something called Sudado Mixto, which was basically another seafood stew. This one was based in a clear broth and offered fish, shrimps, scallops, calamar, octopus and conch, along with onions and tomatoes. Absolutely delicious.
I passed on dessert and asked for the check. It came to 80 Soles ($25), which included 2 sodas, the two dishes, and the cover charge. Expensive, but well worth it.
