Jose Antonio

Hello. RT here. I will include this whenever I get around to writing a report, but here's this restaurant in a nutshell:

Jose Antonio
Bernardo Monteagudo #200
San Isidro 264-0188
Also locations in San Borja and Asia Panamericana Sur
Daily 12:30-4:30 and 7:30-midnight

I went on a Sunday evening; there were only four tables occupied.

This is 'traditional' Peruvian (Criollo) food, in a very classic setting. I went with a date, and we shared a order of Scallops Parmigiana, I had a seafood soup and and order of arroz con pato (duck with rice), and my date had fried calamari. Everything was both delicious and plentiful. Until that night, I had never really seen the allure of scallops with cheese melted on them. The restaurant had extensive choices in both the land and the sea areas of the menu.

Everything was also freshly-made and the service was impeccable.

The total tab, including a pisco sour, two sodas for me and a dessert for my date, came to about US$50. This included the obligatory charge for bread on the table (a practice that I have a problem with). I felt that this was an excellent value and I recommend this restautrant.

They were more than happy to call us a cab when we were finished with our meal.

Jose Antonio has 3 location but I've only been to the one in San Isidro. If you decide to go there it's best to call ahead for directions because it's very hard to find. I've been there 3 times now and I still can't find my way there. I usually call them on the way and give the phone to the taxi driver and let him get the directions.

The food here is typical Peruvian fare that is absolutely outstanding. I always have the choclo a la huancaina for an appetizer and it's always great. This time for the main course I had the bife do chorizo Jose Antonio for the main course which consists of a slab of Argentinian beef that is to die for.

I have taken dates here several times and they are always impressed. When a Peruvian says that the Peruvian food is great I don't think a place can get a higher compliment. It's medium priced, dinner usually runs around $25 per person and reservations aren't necessary if you go early. It's about a 7 sole cab ride from Miraflores but well worth the ride.

Jose Antonio is one of my favorite restaurants in Lima, the cuisine is really wonderful, and the setting is a mixture of elegance with a touch of old hacienda (farm).
You should order as an appetizer you should order "piqueo caliente" which consist of and asssorted tipical peruvian food like tamal, anticuchos, Pappas rellenas(stuffed potatoes with meat an onions) chicharron (crispy fried pork) and a couple more of goodies that I don`t remember right now, but is a must have.
As an entree you should have something traditional peruvian like arroz con pato (rice with duck) or tacu tacu (refried beans with a humongus steak so tender that melts in your mouth accompanied with fried bananas and fried egg) is deleicious dont leave peru without trying it, also you must have a pisco sour and as a dessert Picarones.
Then you can say that you have tasted peruvian food.
I am so hungry from writing these that i will have dinner tonight in San Antonio. and <I will make a toast to the health of all my gringo friends that read these note.
I have tryed Grilia Italiana and is a wonderful great tip.

The Best

I have to agree, when I was there in December I went there with my sister, (she has buisiness in Peru).
It was a Catholic holiday, and although it was Friday the place wasn't crowded.
Start off with a Havana Club ( not available in the U.S. shame), I also had the Argentinian Lomo, the best, with arroz con choclo and salad etc. Best meal i had in Lima. Of course after 2 bottles of Ocucaje Fond Du Cap, I might of said that about a hot dog.
Returned to the hotel, I don't know if it was the wine or the meal, but I had a definete urge. ...

RT here. I ate there again this trip, and the food, service, and value all continue to be outstanding. I give this place my highest recommendation.
