About a year ago, I signed up for a free email account at peru.com. I don’t use it for anything, but I thought that it could come in handy to have an email address @peru.com. One day, I might use it for something, and then I will get back to you.
The one thing that it does get me is Peruvian spam. But since I am always looking for all the information that I can get, I welcome el Spamo del Peru. The ads run to career advice, travel deals and the such. They also include nightclub events and restaurant ads. One ad was for a restaurant called Punto Blanco. It is on the beach, and their ad offered a seafood buffet every day for 39 Soles. They cared enough to spam me; I figured, what can it hurt to try it?
Punto Blanco
Corredor Costa Verde, Miraflores
252-8454
Open every day for lunch
There is no exact street address – make sure that the taxi driver knows where it is. I asked if they knew the restaurant Punta Blanco, and didn’t get in a cab until I heard the word ‘playa’ (beach) come out of the driver’s mouth. As a hint, you can tell them that it is right near CALA Restaurant. The fare will be anything from 4-8 Soles from Miraflores. I paid 7 going, and 5 coming back. It’s worth $2 for the ride.
Punto Blanco, as its name suggests, is all decked out in white; the walls, the décor, the waiters. White, white, white. I could hear my mother telling me not to mark up the walls.
The place is only a month old, so the walls may indeed be scuffed by the time that I return. The restaurant is upscale, in terms of the service and food quality. And they’ve gotten a good reputation, obviously. There are probably 150 seats there, and the restaurant was nearly full when I left.
Punto Blanco offers quite the spread for lunch. There were eight salad choices, six different ceviches, some sushi choices, soups, a few different rice dishes, and about 15 different chafing dishes with hot selections. Most everything ran to fish and seafood, but there were three chicken choices and a couple of beef options. To top it all off, there were a half dozen cakes for dessert, along with a bunch of flavors of ice cream.
And this wasn’t your standard buffet slop – it was all very well prepared and constantly replenished. My total bill, including a soda and a coffee afterwards, was 50 Soles (about $17). The waiter explained to me that they also had an a la carte menu for lunch, and that they operated as a disco at night (he pointed out the lighting system), and the kitchen was open then, too.
I recommend the buffet at Punto Blanco. Even with the volume of customers, I can’t see how they are making very much money with the offer. Either they will have to raise the price, or lower the quality (probably the former) very soon. Get there while it is still a deal.
Getting a cab on the beach was not a problem. They were passing by all the time. I flagged one down and headed back to the apartment to explode.
