here is my two cents:
this one will show you the socio-economic level of each area in Lima, just to prevent getting rippoff; furthermore, you can find police station, churches, gas stations, supermarkets, malls, etc.
One quick question. Lots of good links here but also interested in a source where one can purchase maps of Lima.I have noticed some of the taxis have little map books with index in them. Thanks rbc100

City Maps
Most big bookstores in any tourist district, like Miraflores, San Isidro or Barranco, would have city maps. Ask for a "Guía de Calles".
Also the telephone book (yellow pages) will have the most complete set of city maps with a detailed alphabetically ordered streets index. If you have friends in Lima you can ask them for last year's yellow pages phone book and tear off that section (I carry in my car a city map teared-off from my 2002 yellow pages phone book). We get a new phone book free every year anyway.

RT,
Yes San Juan is short for San Juan de Miraflores. If i'm not mistaken it is not a highly desirable residential area.
Magdalena (short for Magdalena del Mar) is wedged between San Miguel and San Isidro. Bellavista is between San Miguel and Callao. Jesus Maria is below Brena.
Luckily for us all the top mongering districts are clearly labeled.

Missing and mistaken...

...I found this map, and it is helping...
...Not everything is marked -- I know that Barranco is right below Miraflores, but what else is missing? And is 'San Juan' San Juan de Miraflores?...
Let's see:
Lima can be very confusing, even for limeños. Maybe I can help, or maybe I'll only make it more confusing. I have edited your map, making a few corrections and adding the missing names. I am posting it to you via e-mail so you can edit your post.
Also, here are some precisions:
- First of all Callao is a different city. Callao has six districts: Callao, La Perla, La Punta, Bellavista, Carmen de La Legua and Ventanilla. All those districts are not part of Lima but part of Callao
- There are three districts marked in the updated map only by their initials: C. D. L. stands for Carmen de la Legua (Callao); P. L. stands for Pueblo Libre, and J. M. stands for Jesus Maria.
- Regarding San Juan, you must be careful not to be confused; there is San Juan de Miraflores, and there is San Juan de Lurigancho. There is also Lurigancho-Chosica, a district not shown in the map which is east of San Juan de Lurigancho and north of Ate-Vitarte (and right next to both). So you see, there are two San Juans and two Luriganchos.
Is it clearer now, or is it more confusing? Maybe it is better to stick to the districts as shown in the map (the updated version).
