Giving thanks to helpful posters

OK, this is just stupid, but I have a few treads that I would have liked to add thanks to the author for and I just can't seem to figure out how to do it. Am I just blind and missing something obvious? I'm not computer illiterate, I swear!

The "Thanks" tool is available 0nly to users of a certain rank. If you post with regularity, soon you will have that tool activated.

OK, I should know this next one: What the heck is "Rep Power"?

See the picture below. The top one is Homo_Lo_Gato's and the bottom one is mine. You can see that HLG has a Rep Power of 45, but just one box, and I have a score of 38 and three boxes.

I hope someone can explain. Because I personally know HLG, and his reputation precedes him everywhere we go. Once, we walked into a Banos Turcos, and the girls all screamed with excitement. That's quite a reputation -- certainly more than 7 points more than me. When I walk into a Banos Turcos, the girls all laugh.

Nobody seems to really know exactly how the "Rep Power" works but, according to the explanations given by Alex quite some time ago, it has something to do with the "Thanks" received. If I understood correctly, the thanks from a forist with higher rank or higher "Rep Power" have more weight. Moderators can also add or substract to user's reputation so there is a chance that you could find a forist with "negative" reputation (red boxes) as oposed to "positive" reputation (green boxes)

The reason why I have just one box is because I have disabled the reputation tool in my profile; you can see my box is black instead of green.
