Joda????

Good afternoon. RT here.

I was chatting on-line with an amiga, and she asked me if something I said was 'sarcasm' (she practices her English and I practice my Espanol).

I told her that it was 'broma' and then I said "joda????"

She told me not to use the word 'joda' but to stick to 'broma'.

When I asked why, she really wouldn't give me a good answer. Can someone help me out, please?

"joda" is for "joder", in english it could be "to fuck". Don't fuck me = no me jodas; this is a translation for american spanish. But specifically in Perú "joda" is just to be in the mood of to do jokes to someone, in Argentina there are the famous "Jodas para Tinelli" it is a secuence of hidden camera comedy show like in "Just for Laughs". Perhaps to your friend it was very aggressive. Is she from Perú?. Although "Joda" has an intention a bit malicious (for example to laugh about the fatness of somebody), and a "broma" is more an innocent prank.
I hope that my personal english don't be an obstacle to understand what i try to explain, regards and congratulations for the english forum, i always read your reports of Lima.

Joda synonym of broma?... Noo my friend, not in Perú, too inelegant a word. I wouldn't utter that word in any context in front of ANY females period.

There are SO many ways to use the verb "joder", for instance you and your peruvian buddy go to "Emmanuelle" (on a weeknight) and a bunch of the less cute girls are pestering the shit out of you close to your boiling point before you sit at a table; you'd comment to your friend: "-Ya me están jodiendo mucho estas putas-".... I'd say it just loud enough so they'll scram, but not so loud that the more desirable girls will hear it.
