Nirvana is widely credited with bringing the sound and spirit of late-'70s punk
rock to a mainstream pop audience. In 1991 the Seattle-based trio took the
angry, nihilistic message of the Sex Pistols' landmark 1977 single "Anarchy in
the U.K." to #6 (#1 Modern Rock) with its own sarcastic blueprint for
frustration, "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Nirvana's reign was tragically cut short
slightly more than two years later, on April 5, 1994, when leader Kurt Cobain
took his own life following at least one earlier suicide attempt and severe
bouts with drug addiction, a chronic stomach ailment, and depression. He was
27.

A 30 años de su muerte, algo para recordarlo:

Un día como hoy, pero de 1994, Kurt Donald Cobain dejó de existir a sus 27 años, sin embargo, a pesar de que han pasado 30 años de su muerte, sigue siendo un ícono del rock.

Kurt Donald Cobain Fradenburg nació el 20 de febrero de 1967, un año decisivo en la historia del rock. Se dice que recibió su primera guitarra a los 14 años y desde entonces, a la par que sacaba sus primeros acordes, nada le interesaba más que formar una banda.
De algún modo, supo que era en la música donde trascendería en el tiempo, aunque eso llegó después. Primero, una dura adolescencia se encargó de marcar la impronta rebelde, reflexiva y atormentada que cargaría a lo largo de su vida.
Con solo 9 años, le tocó vivir el divorcio de sus padres, y los años siguientes sería un ir y venir de la casa de uno y del otro. En la secundaria, era blanco de las burlas de sus compañeros y generalmente estaba solo. Su único interés era la música y el dibujo.
Al cumplir 18 años, Kurt Cobain fundó Nirvana junto a Krist Novoselic. Aunque éste no era su primer proyecto musical, sí era la primera vez que se unía con alguien que tomaba la música en serio y no solo como un pasatiempo. Junto al baterista Chad Channing graban su primer LP, Bleach, en 1989, por el sello independiente Sub Pop Records.
Sin embargo, es con su siguiente disco con el que logran la atención no solo del circuito independiente de Seattle, sino a nivel mundial. A fines de 1990, Dave Grohl entra a la batería y, al año siguiente, lanzan Nevermind, su primera obra maestra y el disco que pondría al grunge en el ojo de la industria.
Kurt Cobain no solo era un frontman de una energía capaz de electrizar a una platea (o a una generación), sino, sobre todo, un compositor que supo llenar sus letras de una sensibilidad escalofriante que, a través de su voz áspera y taciturna, se volvieron eternas.
