El protagonista es el Capitán Trueno, un caballero español de la Edad Media en tiempos de la Tercera Cruzada (postrimerías del siglo XII). Acompañado por sus amigos Goliath y Crispín y, en ocasiones, también por Sigrid, novia de Trueno y Reina de la Isla de Thule, se dedica a recorrer el mundo en busca de aventuras que le permitan plasmar su condición de luchador por el débil, defensor de la justicia y liberador de los oprimidos.

X-Men (conocido como X-men o La Patrulla X en España y Hombres X en Hispanoamérica) es un grupo de superhéroes del Universo Marvel creado por Stan Lee y Jack Kirby, que tuvo su primera aparición en septiembre de 1963. Sus aventuras han sido publicadas en diversos cómics de Marvel Comics, llegando a disfrutar de varias colecciones mensuales dedicadas a ellos. Además, se han realizado varias adaptaciones en series de animación y películas.

La serie parte de la idea de que la evolución humana seguiría activa, encontrándose de hecho ante una encrucijada, en la que una nueva especie con grandes poderes y capacidades estaría naciendo, los mutantes. Los protagonistas de X-Men son un grupo de ellos; los mutantes se caracterizan, de entre los personajes superheroicos de los cómics, porque han adquirido superpoderes de forma natural, debidos a cambios en su estructura genética.
El tema principal en sus historias es la persecución del denominado "sueño de Xavier": la integración de los mutantes en una sociedad humana que les teme y que a la vez necesita su protección. Es por ello que Charles Xavier (a veces llamado como el Profesor X o simplemente el profesor) decide reclutar a un grupo de jóvenes mutantes y adiestrarlos en el uso de sus poderes, con el doble fin de proteger a los humanos de mutantes malvados, así como de defender a los mutantes del miedo de los humanos.

En contrapartida, otros grupos de mutantes buscarían rebelarse violentamente contra la humanidad; el principal de ellos sería el encabezado por Magneto, el archienemigo del grupo.

Mi trasfondo académico es el campo de la antropología, el estudio de la cultura humana. Una de las conclusiones obvias de los antropólogos es que todas las personas tienen un sentido de lo moral: Algunas cosas son correctas, y otras incorrectas. La gente es incurablemente moral. La psicología se refi ere con frecuencia a este sentido de lo moral como conciencia. La teología suele referirse a esto como el sentido de lo que debe ser o el sello de lo divino.

Lo cierto es que la medida estándar, por medio de la cual nuestra conciencia condena o aprueba, es infl uenciada por la cultura. Por ejemplo, en la cultura esquimal (Inuit) si uno va de viaje y se le terminan los alimentos, es perfectamente permisible entrar en el iglú de un esquimal desconocido y comer todo lo que hay disponible. En la mayor parte de otras culturas occidentales,entrar en una casa desocupada sería considerado como un "allanamiento de morada", un delito castigado por la ley. Aunque el estándar de lo correcto puede diferir de una cultura a otra, y a veces aun dentro de una misma cultura, toda persona tiene un sentido de lo que es correcto y de lo que no lo es.

Cuando una persona siente que su percepción de lo correcto ha sido violada, se enojará. Él o ella se sentirá ofendido y resentido con la persona que ha violado su confi anza. El acto injusto llega a ser como una barrera entre las dos personas y la relación se fractura. Aunque quisieran, no pueden vivir como si nada malo hubiera pasado. Hay algo dentro del ofendido que clama por justicia.
